Journalist. Educator.

Network news correspondent

Collaborative journalism project director

Faculty member University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Media

Former Fellow, Poynter Institute for Media Studies

Journalist

For more than two decades, I covered the southern U.S. for NPR. Now, I manage a collaboration that brings together top journalists to produce award-winning coverage of military and veterans issues – online, on public radio, and in print. Hear my NPR stories or explore the American Homefront Project.

Media analyst

I write and speak about journalism ethics, new media, social media, and the future of journalism. I examine how journalistic values are evolving, and I study the possible effects for journalists, media organizations, and news consumers. Read my columns at Poynter.org.

Educator

I teach audio journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill, where my students produce a weekly radio news program that the Society of Professional Journalists named the nation’s best in five of the past six years. Learn more about my teaching and listen to the students’ stories.
